HOW TO BRING TRAFFIC TO YOUR WEBSITE

This website traffic tutorial is split into four distinct parts, each including what you need to do and why — with 'homework to do' before moving on.

Let's assume that your website is already published on the Web and that you are just beginning your website promotion activities. If you have already begun, we suggest that you read over this material to get a clear idea of what it contains, then skip the parts that you have already accomplished and fill in any you've missed.

Promoting your site takes time and ongoing effort. It may take several weeks or months to gain entry into Internet directories and search engines. So be sure to bookmark this page now, as you will want to return to it later as you progress.

PART ONE - INTERNET DIRECTORIES

Start your website promotion efforts by listing your website at the most popular Internet directories.

Section One - Preparation

Being listed in directories is easy and doesn't require much effort. Simply pay attention to the details of the forms you will be filling out. The point of any directory is to provide visitors with useful listings of quality websites. What makes your site worthwhile? Think about your entry in a way that will encourage its acceptance. The best way to guarantee acceptance, and a prominent listing, is to have something unique to offer. Here is your homework assignment:

Section Two - Open Directory Project

The Open Directory Project is the largest, most comprehensive human-edited directory of the Web. It is constructed and maintained by an immense, global community of volunteer editors. While your site should offer high quality, unique content, the DMOZ editors usually won't reject a site without a good reason. This, along with the fact that submitting to the DMOZ is free of charge, makes it a perfect starting point. Before you submit, here is your homework assignment:

You also might want to visit the Open Directory Public Forum, a site run by the Open Directory Project editors. Although not directly affiliated with DMOZ, this website is loaded with useful information, such as the status on your website directory listing.

REALITY CHECK:

Regardless of what other people might tell you, just placing your site in the Open Directory Project will not affect your website traffic enough to be noticed. Doing so is just a small part of your overall marketing strategy. When statistics are being analyzed in the future, you will want to be sure this directory has already been factored in — 'leave no stone unturned'. Consider any resulting visitors as happy little bonuses, but don't get too excited.

Section Three - Yahoo Directory

Your next task is to get into the Yahoo Directory. This is no longer a free service and presently costs a minimum of $299 a year. If yours is a commercial site, then this may be well worth it for you. In the past, our company has been very successful at optimizing sites organically for top ranking on the Yahoo search engine. However, we've noticed recent inconsistent fluctuations and the tendency for Yahoo to list locator and directory sites toward the top. Yahoo appears to be pushing towards an all-paid search portal. The benefits remain to be seen. Here is your next assignment:

Section Four - LookSmart Directory

LookSmart is the third of the big website directories and registration is entirely Pay-Per-Click. If you do well optimizing your site for search engines in general, you would most likely do as well in the LookSmart 'organic' search results. Organic results are the free ones. We'll get into Pay-Per-Click advantages and disadvantages in a different section of this site. Here is your homework:
